Scott James Matheson
Paul, good morning.

Paul Hamilton
Good morning.

Scott James Matheson
Paul was slightly delayed. Everybody’s slightly delayed because of North Valdosta Road and all the construction going on out.

Paul Hamilton
Yeah, it’s a little nutty.

Scott James Matheson
There it was a little bit of a tense morning. So, in the Matheson household, Ashland was hopping on a bus at 5:00 AM this morning and traveling to Universal. It’s a field trip. Boy, we paid for this thing about 5-6 months ago. So, the big days arrived. They’re down there. Don’t come back till tomorrow at about midnight.

Paul Hamilton
That is a world wind, isn’t it?

Scott James Matheson
But it was Kylie that we had earmarked for getting up and getting her there. Ashlyn has been packing and planning for four days now. This morning, she was the first up got into the bathroom. I went and got Kylie up. Kylie got but as they got on to North Valdosta Rd. it was pucker time. Uh, because they had plotted out 25 minutes to get there in plenty of time. But North Valdosta Rd. was on the overnight hours is under full resurfacing.

Paul Hamilton
As I well know, yes. I live over there so.

Scott James Matheson
I believe their hours of operation are seven or eight until 6:00 in the morning. So, as they were going up there at 4:30 to get there at 5 they ran into full on construction. So, Kylie was going ‘they don’t let you turn right and they don’t let you onto the road and they don’t let you.” They figured it out, but it was it was nervous time.

Paul Hamilton
They made their way there. But at least they’re doing it when it’s the least amount of traffic.

Scott James Matheson
So, you know what I did at 5:00 AM, I started approaching North Valdosta Road off a Country Club. Saw what they were doing, and they had full barriers across the road, so I just u- turned, went all the way down to 18, which added about 15 minutes to the trip to go through town to get on at 18 to go north. Added some time. So, we plan ahead if you’re prior to six AM yes, if you’re an early bird they’re still there a couple more days.

Paul Hamilton
But even during the normal hours the I think that unevenness of the road is kind of, I notice people were going, we’re going a little slower too.

Scott James Matheson
Yeah. Pick your poison. Left Lane is shaved, right lane is.

Paul Hamilton
Yeah, because we were turning. I was turning onto a perimeter off of North Valdosta Rd yesterday and I noticed people were making their turns a little slower there because it’s gotten quite bumpy, so probably could use a little slower speed there anyway.

Scott James Matheson
I agree. they take that kind of double, that double turn that hard left hard right?

Paul Hamilton
You know where that Eliano’s is going in there at North Valdosta Road. I’m wondering if they’re going to put a light there because I’m concerned about accidents because that’s becoming an accident prone area.

Scott James Matheson
So they’re going to exit backwards, back onto Country Club.

Paul Hamilton
Oh, they are.

Scott James Matheson
Yeah, they’ll have a little access road to come in right through there.

Paul Hamilton
OK.

Scott James Matheson
No, you. We can’t let them merge straight out. Period of the story, or they’re gonna build a connector to go back up to the Chick-fil-A exit right there.

Paul Hamilton
Oh, OK. Yeah. Gotcha. Yeah. Yeah.

Scott James Matheson
Uh, yeah. So, they’ll tuck right in. It’ll be the coffee wars. They’ll be right across from.

Paul Hamilton
They sure will right across from Starbucks. It’ll be interesting.

Scott James Matheson
Right. Everybody’s got their favorite. My favorite is the pot at home.

Paul Hamilton
Cheaper, isn’t it? My gosh.

Paul Hamilton
It’s quite costly. Typically, will go to Starbucks if someone’s giving me a little gift card or something to that effect. Or sometimes I get rewards.

Scott James Matheson
Yeah, I will never go there. That’s not a I just. That’s not a dig on a company. That’s just, that’s just not my. My wife loves it. My daughter, the youngest gets a, gets some sort of iced coffee. Yeah, but that’s just not my thing.

Paul Hamilton
Well, I’m trying to. I’m trying to cut off, cut out some of that sugar. So, the best thing that I can do is get the regular k-cup coffee and pop it in there and get that.

Scott James Matheson
See, I think even those are expensive. I try and you know, you try and figure out which the biggest bulk bag or otherwise that you can grab.

Paul Hamilton
Yeah, but it’s fresh every time. Scott, I get it if you do a pot.

Scott James Matheson
You could sit there for an hour.

Paul Hamilton
Because yeah, because I’ll drink sometimes two or three cups of coffee a day. During the winter, now summer is typically one because it’s too dang hot to have a cup of coffee in the afternoon.

Scott James Matheson
Yet they’re yet at 95, they’re lined up around the building to display.

Speaker 3
When you, yeah, when you consider that half the pot that you actually make in one of those brew things, you wind up pouring out because it burns.

Scott James Matheson
So mine has the timer. Mine goes off. In an hour and a half or something like that. Yeah, but none goes to waste my house. Rebecca gets to the cup I bring her in the morning when I pray. She gets another one when she heads to school. And Kylie, when she finally wakes up, takes the rest and she heats it in the microwave.

Paul Hamilton
Well, at least it’s well used.

Scott James Matheson
Paul, good morning. I could throw some news of the day at you. I woke fresh this morning and ran to my many sources to surf news and prepare for the show and absolutely loved to have my president telling us, quote, if you want to take on the federal government, you need some F-15s you don’t need AR15s, unquote.

Paul Hamilton
Wow, he said that?

Scott James Matheson
That’s about the 15th time he that’s a tired line with him. But that’s what he told a large group. He was speaking to yes, the headline read, “The Second Amendment is useless because the government can crush you.” Are you 80? Are you? That’s just your, I understand the last President said some things that should have gone up on a wall as examples of what not to say. But dude you just don’t say that.

Paul Hamilton
No, no you don’t.

Scott James Matheson
You just don’t say that. It’s his favorite one liner, of course. Also identified assault weapons, which there is no class of weapon that carries that distinction. That’s right. So if you want to say AR and its action then you’re also saying my camp 9, my simple camp 9, my Woodstock Camp 9 is the exact same. Throw your clip in and start popping. Yeah, it’s no different.

Speaker 3
Don’t think. Don’t think they won’t eventually go there too.

Scott James Matheson
I know, I know, it’s creeping incrementalism. So, I get it. I absolutely get it and so does the NRA, and that’s why they have a very hard line on anything all the way up to a 50 Cal.

Paul Hamilton
Yeah, I didn’t know that. I wonder what spurred that comment. Has there been something in the news lately about?

Scott James Matheson
Just pandering to the crowd.

Paul Hamilton
OK, yeah, trying to get the attention off the documents that were found.

Scott James Matheson
Oh my gosh.

Paul Hamilton
In the in the garage.

Scott James Matheson
And he’ll make no comment on that to limit his liability. That’s exactly what they said. The strategy is to say nothing to limit his liability. Ah, come on.

Paul Hamilton
On very interesting.

Scott James Matheson
I missed it. I tried finding the story, but and maybe you saw it or maybe nobody saw it because it wasn’t the raid. When they heard that the documents were there, they didn’t go kicking down doors and carrying out documents and make a very public spectacle of it. I just I was waiting for it or I was looking for it? I didn’t hear about it. And yeah, couldn’t find it. And then, of course, the Democrat out of South Carolina saying it’s very he’s making us look bad.

Paul Hamilton
I wonder if they found his estate planning documents in the garage.

Scott James Matheson
Under lock and key with the Corvette.

Paul Hamilton
Under lock and. Yeah, yeah. With the Corvette in the trunk of the Corvette.

Scott James Matheson
You know, my garage was locked.

Paul Hamilton
I keep it, I keep it secure.

Scott James Matheson
Paul, when’s the next summit? When’s the

Paul Hamilton
Next, the next workshop will be next Tuesday, but it’s full, Scott.

Scott James Matheson
Oh, never mind.

Paul Hamilton
It is full. I was told yesterday or day before that we had maxed it out, which is a great problem for us to have. But yeah, we have a full workshop next Tuesday, but so the next opportunity to come and join us will be on the well, I was going to say February 14th, but I think we’ve moved that one. I think we’ve got it. On the on the 7th.

Scott James Matheson
Yeah, don’t do. Don’t do one on Valentine’s Day, for crying out loud.

Paul Hamilton
Well, the boys and myself will be skiing in Bozeman, Mt on the 14th. So, we’re going to be out of town, but the 7th will be our next our next workshop. And of course, you know, those are typically the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month at 1:00 O’clock and I get tons of great comments from folks about the workshop and they really enjoy it. So, opportunity to share information. And get your teed up for moving forward with an estate plan.

Scott James Matheson
Who wouldn’t? Matter of fact, Paul used to do them out at one of the Rose Rooms out in the Campus at VSU. But now you got your own.

Paul Hamilton
Nice big office to do that and, so yeah. It’s nice to be able to just walk down the hall, right versus you know, get my stuff together and going down to the college.

Scott James Matheson
A weapons expert said look at the ATF ruling on pistol arm braces that probably spurred the comments, he said.

Paul Hamilton
Ah, it suddenly did.

Scott James Matheson
Wondered what prompted that? You just don’t like to have the leader of the free world talk about his military can crush you, buy all the guns you want.

Paul Hamilton
I know. Yeah, you’re gonna need that with means.

Scott James Matheson
You want to take on, take on the federal government. We’ll crush you real quick. I’ll share a phone call with you and then we’ll talk some more. About the blocking and tackling of end of life. Yes, for crying out loud, I shared at the 6:00 o’clock hour as I was exiting the building about 5:00 o’clock at City Hall. I had to call in to Richard Hardy. I talked to Richard Hardy for about the first mile away from City Hall on. On North Valdosta Rd. On Ashley St. and as he and I finished and sicked him on a project. I hung up and the phone rang again, and it was a pleasant young lady asking if I had time to take a call from Senator Osov. I said, of course I do. So, he gets on. He was in the tornado ravaged communities.

Paul Hamilton
Up in Griffin and that area.

Scott James Matheson
Correct, correct. And although what 7 counties, I think they declared a disaster area. So, he was touring a lot of the damage, promising them. The federal government is, uh, is going to offer the relief that they’re hoping for. So, I thanked him for that and then he said that words you always want to hear. Is there a project I can help you with? Oh yes, senator.

Paul Hamilton
Oh yes, there is.

Scott James Matheson
I have one cute queued up and ready to go. I’ve told him all about it, told him how his staff could help us help navigate, he says. Well as I tell you in a grant world, it goes, there’s never promises in a grant world, but we will prepare you better than anybody else. So basically saying, we’re going to have every I dotted, and every T crossed. So, I appreciate that absolute help from that staff.

Paul Hamilton
That’s great.

Scott James Matheson
So Anna Cullen office staff will sit down with us today and we’ll map it out for first round of design phase and second round of rhe actual roll up your sleeves and revitalize, so keep your fingers crossed again.

Paul Hamilton
Oh, that’s great.

Scott James Matheson
No guarantees. But when that staff gets on board, they were in love with the project, by the way.

Paul Hamilton
Yeah, and the project is?

Scott James Matheson
I’m not telling you.

Paul Hamilton
It’s a secret project.

Scott James Matheson
I can tell you what I’m chasing, but again, without the guarantee of being awarded, we just know. We just know what has been. What has been detrimental on a piece of paper, or I’ll take it back, what people have viewed as detrimental to our community for so long. Hey, look at your poverty rate. Hey, look at is now gonna be a plus in this chase. I will now utilize what people have said. Nah, look, man, look for decades and now say it is going to serve us well in this revitalization effort. It is now a tool I can use. So, as I pitched it to the senator, he agreed and he agreed it was worthy and he agreed it was the absolute spirit of what this grant is meant for. Keep your fingers crossed. Imagine there’s a dozen other communities going hey?

Paul Hamilton
Yeah, yeah, for real.

Scott James Matheson
We also have. So, it’s a great vision and a lot of people help mold that vision over the next year, and if we’re successful and I’ll make it a huge community celebration.

Paul Hamilton
That’ll be great.

Scott James Matheson
I’ll bring a band in or something.

Paul Hamilton
Sure, you could get the Wildcats out there. The Wildcat marching band.

Scott James Matheson
I meant, you know, Blues or something.

Paul Hamilton
Oh, OK. Yeah, I see.

Scott James Matheson
So that was a neat phone call. He says, you got my cell number? I said, yeah, you gave it to me during the campaign and I put it on speed dial ever since.

Paul Hamilton
Oh, that’s great. It’s good to know that that they’re reaching out and taking care of the communities and.

Scott James Matheson
Yep, good call. And again, I get tingly just thinking about that project. If it does, it’s one of the more visible and more useful little projects that we could we could actually draw up as a community.

Paul Hamilton
Do you hear from Senator Warnock’s office?

Scott James Matheson
I will more now. I’ll tell you how it goes, and this is again not a knock. He was a two-year senator. So, you get a better staff as a six-year senator. You know the game.

Paul Hamilton
I can see that, yeah.

Scott James Matheson
You know the game. A lot of the people that work for his staff tool around at different offices up there when opportunity knocks. And they’re always applying for that next level. Next step up. Next staff job, sure or otherwise. So, when you’re 2 year, you can’t really compile the All Star staff that you need, and they do come and go because they don’t know whether you’re gonna win reelection. So, it’s a whole different. We’ll come back and talk more 26 minutes after 8:00 O’clock. Boy, that’s no man’s land. I don’t even know where we are. We’re talk 92.1. You know me well enough. I never warmed up to it.

Paul Hamilton
Your listeners would love a little country mix down there.

Scott James Matheson
I don’t, I don’t control any of that. That’s Jack Reagan.

Paul Hamilton
I bet Jack’s got some country loaded up. Somewhere up there.

Speaker 3
Fine, I do. I’ll put some. If I knew you wanted some, I would have played it.

Paul Hamilton
OK, every now and then.

Scott James Matheson
Now you traveled to one big name act.

Paul Hamilton
I went to see Garth. Amy Carter and her fella Mike Davis, preacher up at Hahira United Methodist and there was a crew of us from Valdosta.

Scott James Matheson
You did a picture and it was a nice who’s who.

Paul Hamilton
Yeah, it was. Oh, and Nancy Anderson and Becky and Latisha Bradley and my sweet little girl, Bailey, my daughter was with me cause we had gone to a cheer competition at Jacksonville drove to Orlando. We had an absolute blast. Garth Brooks is a performer like no other. And I saw him in his heyday, when my buddy Rich Moore of that’s one of my army buddies and I got last minute tickets when we were at our basic officer course in San Antonio, TX. That was 1998, I think. But then last, I can’t remember it was summer. Everything’s run together sometime either last summer or last fall, when Garth went to Orlando, I made it down there for that big old concert. It was fun.

Scott James Matheson
Paul Hamilton’s the voice you hear in studio right now, Hamilton.

Paul Hamilton
Elder. Hamilton Trust, Estate and Elder Law

Scott James Matheson
Like Hamilton Estate and elder one. And then and then in the logo, the Super cool logo, you don’t know where the & quite falls.

Paul Hamilton
I know and that’s something I think we’re gonna have to fix. Yes, because it is confusing.

Scott James Matheson
Tough though, because it really looks cool.

Paul Hamilton
You know, I think John designed that John Bennett designed that ampersand and you know we with permission of course Co-opted it and essentially changed Bennett to Hamilton. And uh, but yeah, it’s a beautiful ampersand. But we do need to tweak it because I think it is a bit confusing, particularly the fact that we changed from Hamilton estate planning to Hamilton Trust estate and elder law. So, it’s a mouthful, but the bottom line is we take care of people. We protect your assets and make sure that your assets are protected during life and your stuff goes to who you want it to go to after you’re gone.

Scott James Matheson
It sucks that you’re even needed. It sucks that the government’s waiting there at end of life.

Paul Hamilton
Well, it’s not the government. It’s the nursing home. It’s car accidents.

Scott James Matheson
The bad weather.

Paul Hamilton
It’s the creditors, predators, in laws, and outlaws. So, it’s a combination of all of those things that can head into it.

Scott James Matheson
Yeah, it’s the your health could dictate your.

Paul Hamilton
Ohh yes, absolutely your spouses health can dictate so you know when I talk about predators, I say, you know, it might surprise you to for me to tell you to look left and look right. But one of your predators is sitting right beside you. It’s your spouse. Not that they are a intentional predator. But if their health fails and you haven’t planned properly, then all this nest egg that you’ve built over the course of a lifetime could be subject to, you know, depletion. And you know if you have to use all that to take care of that spouse. What’s going to be left to take care of you? So that’s something to consider as well.

Scott James Matheson
And people, if somebody, all their wisdom, all their training, all their, their continuing education, if they want to dump it onto a table for free, take advantage of it. their workshops. The next one sold out full but on the 7th of February.

Paul Hamilton
Yes, we’ll have a have our next workshop and we have a few people enrolled in that one. But yeah, would love for people to come it. It’s our approach is to share information, to share our knowledge. To find out what works for you, and we’re, you know, you can’t be cookie cutter about this. Concepts are similar and whatnot, but everybody I have this one slide that I use in our workshop and it says do I need a will or trust? and I love getting the responses and people are like a Will. Well, I just need a will or I just need a trust or you need both and I always say, well, at this point, the answer is, I don’t know. For me, as your as your counselor, I don’t know what you need because you haven’t told me what’s important to you. So, through the course of that workshop, I give you things to think about, to go home and say is that important to me? And then when you come back at the vision meeting and if you say that’s important to me, Paul, then that’s going to help guide our conversation and guide our direction as to what type of plan we need to take care of that desire.

Scott James Matheson
Perfect. Perfect. So, reach out to him again. The website is.

Paul Hamilton
Hamiltontrust.law and you can go on there under the Events tab and register for that workshop. It, of course is, we do not charge for that, and as and if you attend the workshop, I don’t charge for the console follow up consultation. If you don’t come to a workshop and you just want to have a consultation, we do charge for that. So, you can register online for the workshop. You can also give us a call at 207-0850 and we’ll register you over the phone and some people don’t like to mess with the computer. We understand that and we can accommodate.

Scott James Matheson
Alright, I’m gonna share a story.

Paul Hamilton
Tell a story.

Scott James Matheson
This one doesn’t even fall into the political realm. It falls into the no-duh realm. It also falls into my ongoing conversation in life about everything is not OK. Everything that you deviant behavior 1000 other thing, it’s not OK. You gotta have some societal norms, for crying out loud. Dateline Englewood, Co. Excuse me. OK. Englewood, Co. And it’s unique. This story is unique so far to the state of Colorado, but I guarantee it doesn’t stay. Second, Colorado Library closes due to meth contamination.

Paul Hamilton
In a library.

Scott James Matheson
In a Public Library that they want to make accessible to everybody. Computers and otherwise in the new world, but for the second time in a month, a Colorado library is closed its doors for cleanup due to methamphetamine contamination.

Paul Hamilton
That’s typically means somebody’s cooking meth. Right, because it gets in the walls and in the drywall and all.

Scott James Matheson
Smoking it, cooking it, banging it out of the table, I don’t know. Officials in the Denver suburb of Inglewood shut down the city library last week. Within a couple of hours of getting test results. Showing that the contamination of the facilities restrooms exceeded state thresholds, other spaces such as countertops also tested positive for lower levels of the drug and will require the same specialized cleaning as well. My goodness. Come on.

Paul Hamilton
Yes, it’s sad when you say public resources like that. I’ve abused.

Scott James Matheson
It’s the latest example of the balancing act urban libraries have to navigate between making their facilities welcoming to all while keeping them clean and safe for others as well. And that’s they’re failing out there. But again, no doubt writing on the wall. Are you kidding me? You not think?

Paul Hamilton
I know books, books-a-million here in Valdosta. Just a I love a bookstore. I could go in there for an hour. Or two and just get lost in there, you know.

Scott James Matheson
Take my wife with you.

Paul Hamilton
But for a while they you had to go up to the front to get a key if you need to use their restroom.

Scott James Matheson
For similar.

Paul Hamilton
So yeah, I think maybe for similar reasons maybe they were having some vagrancy issues, but maybe that’s the answer it’s unfortunate, but. Maybe yeah. I got to give a key to get into the restroom.

Scott James Matheson
The only reckless statement I heard in that entire story as they tried to downplay some of it, health officials say meth residue can be an irritant, causing symptoms like an itchy throat, a runny nose, or maybe bloodshot eyes. But secondary exposure isn’t believed to cause long term chronic health concerns, according to Hargo. The guy that they were quoting in the story. Going well, I get. I haven’t read a more irresponsible paragraph in a long time. In a long time.

Paul Hamilton
It also makes your teeth fall out and. Ohh, you know it’s hard. You know addiction and you know, addiction bumps into our state planning stuff too. When people are addicted to drugs and they have children that are addicted to drugs, what do we do about that? So, I think what’s difficult for many of the families that I talked to when we talk about addiction issues is. If you don’t have an addiction, it’s hard to understand it too. It’s hard. It’s hard to understand.

Scott James Matheson
It you can walk, you can walk through life, eyes wide open. You can have lived a rich life. You could have traveled and been worldly. And you know nothing in that world, you know nothing.

Paul Hamilton
And I’ve watched some of that. Some of those things on that was a there was a show. I can’t remember if it’s called dope sick about the opioid epidemic and how people got hooked on the opioids and you know, it’s bad enough that we got street drugs. That was it’s incredibly.

Scott James Matheson
Now more powerful. Are coming in that Amber pill bottle.

Paul Hamilton
Yeah, that the that a drug company push things like that. We have physicians pushing stuff like that.

Scott James Matheson
Cruises. Bonuses. Benefits for the those that they prescribe the most back in their heyday back in.

Paul Hamilton
Ohh yeah.

Scott James Matheson
They don’t do that anymore. Not allowed anymore.

Paul Hamilton
So interesting, interesting stuff and but sad to see a facility have to shut down because of stuff like that.

Scott James Matheson
And I’m glad you were related it to what you do because rational thought is out the window. You sit there and say how can they choose that drug? How can they choose that high over me or the baby or the?

Paul Hamilton
Well, you know and.

Scott James Matheson
Don’t try you. You’re you’ve lost already in in any kind of understanding, you’ve lost?

Paul Hamilton
I had a I give you a real, real-world example of how this plays in. I had a client or have a client who we were doing this planning. And he has a multi $1,000,000 business. And I said, OK, well, who’s going to take over ownership of that business if something happens to you? And he names his son. I was like oh. He said, but he’s doing really good now, Paul, because this relates back to my this is relates back to my prior life as a criminal defense attorney where I represented the young man and several cocaine charges and whatnot and I said, you know, you really need to think twice about that? Because I know he’s doing good now. He’s done good for the past six years and that’s great, but he once had an addiction and he loves you. And when you die, is he going to be able to sustain that? And he said, you’re exactly right. Let’s put the daughter in there instead. So, you. And that’s no, no, no beef against his son. But you have to think about those things when you’re, you know, when you’re thinking about your estate plan, you have to think about the history. Because we know our family, we know our children, we know our loved ones, and you, you just have to find the best fit so that everybody’s protected.

Scott James Matheson
That’s why he’s the best at what he does. Please reach out. Paul Hamilton.

Paul Hamilton
Good talking to y’all.

Scott James Matheson
Yeah, website again.

Paul Hamilton
Hamiltontrust.law and the phone number is 207-0850.

Scott James Matheson
Thanks, Paul.

Paul Hamilton
